Devotees in large numbers thronged temples to offer prayer to Lord Shiva on the occasion of Maha Shivratri. The Shiva temples were decked up to mark the occasion and special arrangements were made to facilitate the rituals. Devotees were seen waiting in long queues to get darshan of the famous “Atmalinga” of the Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna, which is known as Kashi of South India. As per the popular belief, if “Atmalinga” is touched with devotion on Maha Shivrati, dreams will turn into reality. Maha Shivratri, which translates to ‘the great night of Shiva’, is one of the famous festivals in Hinduism. It is celebrated with religious fervour across the nation. Devotees observe fast and special pujas are performed in the temples. They also offer milk to the Shivaling and pray for moksha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders extended wishes to all on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri and prayed for the prosperity of the country and its citizens. Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Best wishes to all of you on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri. May the God of gods, Mahadev blesses everyone. Om Namah Shivay.”
